Nick Lutsko - Reset (Music Video)

In the summer of 2024 I had the opportunity to work on a music video for one of my favorite aritsts: Nick Lutsko. I boarded, animated, and supervised animation on some extended sequences working with a team of 20 animators and artists. Because this was my first time doing any form of supervision I’ve included some notes that I drafted up to send to our team to show my thought process throughout.

The full music video! Below are some behind the scenes process from my involvement.

Sequences 11-17 -

I was in charge of boarding and supervising animation for sequences 11-17. I also animated sequence 13 in this section. Below I have shared video comparisons of story boards and final animation, as well as an example of notes that were sent to the team to guide their animations.

The sequence was divided and sent to 7 animators, including myself. I supervised animation for this sequence as well.

The animators included in this sequence are:

00:19 - Emilee Beeson (illustrated by Emilee Beeson, animated by Dann Beeson)

00:22 - Kacper Korzybski

00:25 - Mike Patten (Hey thats me!)

00:27 - Richard Stevenson

00:30 - Dieter Theuns

00:32 - Esteban Martinez

00:36 - Noah Campagna

00:38 - Nick Lutsko

Compositing work was done by Tim Farrell

Click each name to visit their websites and please consider hiring them for animation work.

For this sequence I sent our team notes and guidelines on what we wanted. Because the theme of this video was going through Nick’s various “eras” most of these notes included possible outfits and gags based off of music videos and specials Nick had put out throughout the years.

Sequence 13 -

I animated this segment in storyboard pro and made the background in Procreate. Compositing work was done by Tim Farrell. I wanted to show that the hospital was smokey and atmospheric so I mocked up examples and sent them to Tim along with reference notes and swatches.

Sequence 25

This sequence served as our grand finale. The idea was to pull something off similar to the Everything Everywhere All at Once quick cut montage and show a whole bunch of different styles of Nick singing the final verse of the song. To prepare this sequence Nick sent me a video of him singing the finale verse which I then synced to the audio track, marked up with dialogue notes, and cut into individual sections to send to our animation team who would essentially “Go hog wild” with it. Check out this before and after comparison below.

We had a lot of incredible artists on this one. Please check out their portfolios and bring them on to any animated projects!

Dieter Theuns - sotc button

Richard Stevenson - devil, cricket man

Justin White - akira nick

Tim Farrell - mad max nick, x-ray nick, cat piss nick, boat parade nick

For this sequence I sent our team notes and guidelines to make sure the quick cuts would sync up with each other. it was very important that the eyes and mouths hooked up properly to avoid any wonky cuts, also included was a guide to make sure things were properly seperated for compositing.

All in all this was an incredible experience and im grateful to Nick, Nayt, and everyone for bringing me on and trusting me to help bring this project to life! Also a huge shout out to our animation team who absolutely freaked it!! I highly recommend following all of thier works.

I’d love to do more music video work in the future!
